As a person diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), I want to share my story about the Chambersburg Y. MS stops people from moving. I have experienced depression and anxiety due to this, especially after seeing so many people debilitated from MS firsthand.

However, I found that exercise helps not just with that, but with cognitive development in adults. Knowing this now, I wish others would realize the benefits of exercise and do it!

My favorite things to do at the Y are fun: ActivTrax and yoga classes (and both are free)! Adding yoga has improved my balance and health significantly.

The Chambersburg Y has given me my quality of life back! My family and I joined 10 years ago. Little did I know what a positive impact it would have on my life. I would especially like to thank several staff members: Linda, Tammy, Barb and Claire.

Corporate Dodgeball

The Chambersburg Memorial YMCA held its 7^th Annual Corporate Dodgeball Tournament on Saturday, February 16.  Sixteen teams participated in two divisions of competition.  Four Teams competed in the Competitive Open division.  The teams consisted of The Old Heads, Royal Flush, UniBombers, and the “Would Be” Adventurers. Each team played each other, which consisted of five games in a match with all four teams advancing to a single elimination round.  The championship game came down to The Old Heads and The Unibombers.


The Old Heads were led Jeremy Brubaker with teammates Stan Vaughn, Chadd Covert, Chad Rydbom, Phil Pautano, Trevor Plasterer, Lance Rydbom, Eric Fleming, Laban Betz, and Shawn Kimple. The Unibombers were led by Ken Hock with teammates Brett Purvis, Tay Jones, Kwame, Josh Kelly, Chandler Smith, Jeff Boushell, Jeremy Shoemaker, Kyle Brake, Clay Cummings, and Cody Rockwell. In the end, the Old Heads defeated UniBombers by a score 3 to 0.
The Coed division had twelve teams: Area 57, The Buck Killers, The Dodgeing Ducks, Sites Garage, Gym Class Heroes, The Roger Dodger, Roy Pitz, Team Patriot, Balls so Hard, Dazed n Confused, Superstars, and Team Swag. Each team played in pool play, with the top 2 teams from each bracket advancing to single elimination. The Championship game came down to Roy Pitz and Ball so Hard. Roy Pitz was led by Lindsey Lyons with teammates Jonathan Lyons, Holly Shearer, John Finucane, Scott Misal, Ryan Richards, Sarah Osterman, Cj Korzarski, Bryan Kemp, Angie Pierce, Jesse Rotz, and Khal Harvy. Ball so Hard was led Rikki Higgins, with teammates Javier Marquez, Justin Ile, Matt Tracey, Shane Frieset, Luke Dayhoff, Kyley Bruno, Jake Bruno, Drew Bream, and Antonia Latskis. Ball So Hard came out on top.

Y's Corporate Challenge Hails Repeat Champions

For the fourth consecutive year, Strickler Agency won the Chambersburg Memorial YMCA's Cardio Capture Corporate Cup Championship on Saturday, February 9th, 2013. The proceeds raised for the event went to fund the YMCA's Sam's and Achievers programs.

This year’s competition included five teams competing in the following events: Bean Bag Toss, Pickle Ball, Shuffle Board and Ladder Ball. Orrstown Bank finished in second place with 1219 points and Aerotek captured third place with 1153 points.  The five teams, which also included Paul Davis Emergency Services and F & M Trust, raised $3,241.

The YMCA’s Sam’s program provides over 350 children with free full privilege YMCA memberships, Tuesday night programs during the school year and 8 weeks of free day camping experiences during the summer time.  While the YMCA’s Youth Achievers program, prepares student in 8^th – 12^th with for post-secondary education.

The Chambersburg YMCA would like to congratulate all participating businesses and persons in supporting our community's and youth's development. A special thank you to all of the volunteers who helped run the event.

Y Raises Funds for Youth with Book Fair

Reading is essential to the development of their young people. On January 21^st of this year, The Chambersburg Memorial YMCA ran its second annual Scholastic Book Fair fundraiser to benefit the youth in their programs. The Y sold 27 percent more and surpassed its challenging $6,000 goal.

Preschoolers, members and non-members were invited to join for special story times throughout the week, focused on different books available at the fair. The lobby became flooded with excitement and energy upon children rushing to the book stands after school.

In addition to the book fair, the Y participated in the “All for One” fundraiser. With this event, Scholastic donates a book for every dollar collected to a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children, families, and teachers.

The Y challenged their Before and After School sites to collect loose change for the chance to win an ice cream party. Combined, The Chambersburg YMCA’s youth donated $335.50 to the “All for Books” program. For the second year in a row, the Y children at Hamilton Heights Elementary came out on top raising $144.82.

For each person who volunteered their time with the fair, The Chambersburg Y has donated a book in their name to a YMCA Program library. The Chambersburg Memorial YMCA would like to recognize and thank all their volunteers for their hard work and dedication.

Results: Chargers vs Carlisle Swim Meet

The Chambersburg Chargers swim team defeated the Carlisle Family YMCA in Carlisle on Saturday, January 19, 2013 with a score of 546-432.  The victory improves the Chargers dual meet record to 4-0 in the YSCAP league. 

The Chargers qualified five new swimmers to the YMCA Central District Championship meet, bringing their season total to 37 qualifiers.  The new qualifiers include Megan Swam, Isabella Fidler, Avery Barley, Ashton Barley, and Jaylin Patterson.

Sixty seven swimmers competed, and 59 set personal best times in at least one event, with 115 total personal bests being set.  Swimmers dropping over 10 combined seconds in their individual events included Nick Alleman, Isabella Fidler, Jacob Greenwood, Madeline Kinton, Andrew Leeper, Michael Martin, Annabelle McCullough, Marcus Rahauser, Makenna Robertson, Sofia Robinson, Nick Wertz, and Savannah Wertz.

The Chargers finish their dual meet season with a home meet against Waynesboro on February 2^nd.  They will finish their league season with the YSCAP Championship Meet at the Graham Aquatic Center in York, PA, February 23-24.

Defeating a Blocking Nerd

On Saturday, January 12^th, ten teams competed in an “A" Division Volleyball Tournament at the Chambersburg Memorial YMCA. Local teams fared well throughout the competition, with close scores in most matches. Dig It and To Kill a Blocking Nerd battled for the league title in the final round. Dig It snagged two wins in a row with scores 25-13 and 25-22 to secure the 2013 Mid-winter “A” Division Championship.

Each team was placed in a bracket of five teams, where they played a two-game match against one another in their bracket. The top three teams out of each pool went on to compete in a single elimination round of playoffs, where the matches were best out of three.

The Y would like to thank everyone who participated. The 2013 "B" Division Volleyball Championship will take place all day Saturday, January 19th, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
