Volleyball League Update

Please continue to communicate with your subs about their sub fee when they play.

Reminders from last weeks:
It has been brought to my attention that the 6:30 games are not getting started on time, which is causing the other games to start late. So I’m asking everyone to have your teammate there 15 minutes prior to start time. I will be talking with my ref and asking them to start the match on time. Our rules state
“Teams need to report to the court at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time.  A forfeit of one game will be recorded if you are not there by the scheduled start time.  The second game will be forfeited after 15 minutes” I am willing to give a few minutes but not more than 5.
Also I was asked to highlight the Net rule, here is how it is stated in our rules
“The USA Rules state that you may not touch the top 6 inches of the net; however we do not play with the rule at the Chambersburg YMCA. You may not touch the net at allIt is too hard as a ref to determine the top 6 inches, so we do not play with that rule.
I would like to highlight one other rule as stated in the rules
“The team captain is responsible for contacting the opposing team captain and the YMCA league director by 12:00pm on the day of the scheduled match, a forfeit failing to meet the notification deadline” We have some people coming from an hour or so away, we don’t want them starting on their way, if their match is canceled.  Also I  am not always at my desk after 12:00, so the earlier the better so I can inform the ref as well.

40 Years of Service

The Chambersburg YMCA Board of Directors and Trustees recently recognized David W. Matthews, Jr., Executive Director of the Chambersburg YMCA for forty years of service.  Over eighty people were in attendance at the Orchard’s Restaurant for the event.

Matthews started with the Chambersburg YMCA as the Physical Director in September of 1972.  Over the course of his forty year career he also served as the YMCA’s Program Director and Associate Executive Director, before becoming the Executive Director of the Chambersburg YMCA in 1980.

As a result of four successful community capital fund-raising campaigns and numerous community volunteers’ help the YMCA has experienced tremendous growth over these forty years with the addition of a second swimming pool, two gymnasiums, three racquetball courts, adult locker rooms and a 7,000 square foot fitness facility.  Most recently, the YMCA completed the renovation of the Coldbrook Elementary School into the William K Nitterhouse Family YMCA Program Center with four child development class rooms, two aerobic studios, a wellness center, an outdoor pavilion, playground equipment and organic gardens.

Matthews thanked those in attendance for their support throughout the forty years and recognized all the volunteers and YMCA staff members for making the Chambersburg YMCA the organization it is today.

2012 Sprint Triathlon Results

The 6th annual Chambersburg Sprint Triathlon was held on Saturday, September 29th with 52 local men and women. Well before sunrise, volunteers were busy setting up the transition area, prepping informational race packets. The race began at 8:00 a.m. and ended just before noon. For many racers, this was their first triathlon.

At 8:00 on the dot, Head Timers Dave Matthews and Adam Leeper began the race will a shrill whistle blast. Over the next three-and-a-half hours, athletes ages 23 to 58 competed with intensity under the bright blue sky. Racers swam 500 yards, biked 16 miles of hilly country roads and ran over three miles along McKinley Street and Stanley Avenue.

The overall male winner for this year’s event was Y member Devin Rosencrance with a time of 1:21:26.  Second place male went to Victor Cretella in a time of 1:21:48. The first place Master’s male was Gerry Perez with a time of 1:23:23.  The second place Master’s male was Y member Dave Brosend in a time of 1:25:42.

For the women, this year’s overall winner was Jenna Ekdahl with a winning time of 1:31:05.  Second place female overall went to Debbie Connor with a time of 1:31:42.  The female Master’s winner was Michelle Lachance with a time of 1:36:42. Desiree Oliveri-McElheny took second place in the female Master’s with a time of 1:45:21.

As the competitors awaited the race results, they were treated to pizza from Pat & Carla’s III and Meadows Italian ice. They were also entertained with a chance to win one of several donated raffle items.

The Chambersburg Memorial YMCA would like to thank its volunteers (numbering over 30), without whom this triathlon would have been possible. Volunteers set up bike racks, checked in racers, manned the bike and run course, counted laps, compiled race results, operated raffle drawings, and handed out awards.  Thanks to each of you for your support of the YMCA and these athletes, and congratulations to the winners.

WSY Kickoff Classic Results

The Chambersburg Chargers competed in their first swim meet of the season at the WSY Kickoff Classic this weekend at Cumberland Valley High School.  Eight Chargers attended the meet. They set a combined total of 26 personal best times and shattered seven Charger team records and five meet records.

Elena Fierer was the first Charger swimmer in the water for the 2012-2013 season, lowering 17 seconds from her 200 backstroke time.  Fierer also later dropped 12 seconds from her 1000 freestyle time.

Abby Stauffer set the first team record for the Chargers, lowering her personal best in the 400 IM by 6 seconds, breaking a 28 year old Charger record in the process.  Her time of 4:43.78 was good for first place and the WSY Kickoff Classic Meet Record.  Stauffer finished fourth in the girls 100 freestyle and third in the 200 IM, just behind PA High School State Champions Meghan Raab and Emily Cameron.

Marget Shelly won the 11-12 girls 400 IM shortly after, dropping 24 seconds from her lifetime best to post a 4:47.64.  Shelly’s time was also a Charger Record and a meet record.  Shelly followed her performance by winning the 11-12 200 IM in 2:15.53, 100 fly in 1:03.79, and 100 free in 54.81, breaking three more meet and team records in the process.

The most notable performance, along with Stauffer’s open IM record, came in the 11-12 girls 500 freestyle.  Shelly posted a time of 5:13.24, which lowered her 11-12 Charger record by 13 seconds, set a meet record, and set an open Charger girls team record.  As a 12 year old, Shelly is now the fastest 500 swimmer in Charger history, lowering Kristen Montello’s previous mark by almost 3 seconds.

Danielle Pong, in her first meet as a 13 year old, posted the third fastest time in both the 13-14 girls 100 and 200 yard breaststrokes.  She also dropped almost two seconds in her 50 freestyle to finish in 26.58.  Pong’s 200 breast time of 2:44.34 was a 10 second drop from her previous best.

Chandler Desotelle dropped six seconds in his 100 back on his way to five personal bests.  Annabelle McCullough posted 3 personal bests, finishing second behind Shelly in the 11-12 girls 100 fly, and third in the 11-12 girls 100 free.  Karlee Metz and Kylee Metz also competed, posting strong early season times in the 100 back, 200 free, and 50 freestyle events.

The Chargers are looking forward to a successful season.  Their first meet in which the entire team will be participating is on October 24.  The team will host its annual Pentathlon on October 27.  The Chargers are fast approaching 100 swimmers on the team and are still accepting swimmers to fill their roster.   Charger results and information can be viewed at www.chbychargers.com and www.twitter.com/chbgchargers.
