40 Years of Service

The Chambersburg YMCA Board of Directors and Trustees recently recognized David W. Matthews, Jr., Executive Director of the Chambersburg YMCA for forty years of service.  Over eighty people were in attendance at the Orchard’s Restaurant for the event.

Matthews started with the Chambersburg YMCA as the Physical Director in September of 1972.  Over the course of his forty year career he also served as the YMCA’s Program Director and Associate Executive Director, before becoming the Executive Director of the Chambersburg YMCA in 1980.

As a result of four successful community capital fund-raising campaigns and numerous community volunteers’ help the YMCA has experienced tremendous growth over these forty years with the addition of a second swimming pool, two gymnasiums, three racquetball courts, adult locker rooms and a 7,000 square foot fitness facility.  Most recently, the YMCA completed the renovation of the Coldbrook Elementary School into the William K Nitterhouse Family YMCA Program Center with four child development class rooms, two aerobic studios, a wellness center, an outdoor pavilion, playground equipment and organic gardens.

Matthews thanked those in attendance for their support throughout the forty years and recognized all the volunteers and YMCA staff members for making the Chambersburg YMCA the organization it is today.
