The 6th annual Chambersburg Sprint Triathlon was held
on Saturday, September 29th with 52 local men and women. Well before
sunrise, volunteers were busy setting up the transition area, prepping informational
race packets. The race began at 8:00 a.m. and ended just before noon. For many
racers, this was their first triathlon.
At 8:00 on the dot, Head Timers Dave Matthews and Adam
Leeper began the race will a shrill whistle blast. Over the next three-and-a-half
hours, athletes ages 23 to 58 competed with intensity under the bright blue
sky. Racers swam 500 yards, biked 16 miles of hilly country roads and ran over
three miles along McKinley Street and Stanley Avenue.
The overall male winner for this year’s event was Y member Devin
Rosencrance with a time of 1:21:26.
Second place male went to Victor Cretella in a time of 1:21:48. The
first place Master’s male was Gerry Perez with a time of 1:23:23. The second place Master’s male was Y member Dave
Brosend in a time of 1:25:42.
For the women, this year’s overall winner was Jenna Ekdahl
with a winning time of 1:31:05. Second
place female overall went to Debbie Connor with a time of 1:31:42. The female Master’s winner was Michelle
Lachance with a time of 1:36:42. Desiree Oliveri-McElheny took second place in
the female Master’s with a time of 1:45:21.
As the competitors awaited the race results, they were
treated to pizza from Pat & Carla’s III and Meadows Italian ice. They were
also entertained with a chance to win one of several donated raffle items.
The Chambersburg Memorial YMCA would like to thank its
volunteers (numbering over 30), without whom this triathlon would have been possible.
Volunteers set up bike racks, checked in racers, manned the bike and run
course, counted laps, compiled race results, operated raffle drawings, and handed
out awards. Thanks to each of you for
your support of the YMCA and these athletes, and congratulations to the
winners.
