The Chambersburg Chargers competed in their first swim meet
of the season at the WSY Kickoff Classic this weekend at Cumberland Valley High
School. Eight Chargers attended the meet. They set a combined total of 26
personal best times and shattered seven Charger team records and five meet
records.
Elena Fierer was the first Charger swimmer in the water for
the 2012-2013 season, lowering 17 seconds from her 200 backstroke time.
Fierer also later dropped 12 seconds from her 1000 freestyle time.
Abby
Stauffer set the first team record for the Chargers, lowering her personal best
in the 400 IM by 6 seconds, breaking a 28 year old Charger record in the
process. Her time of 4:43.78 was good for first place and the WSY Kickoff
Classic Meet Record. Stauffer finished fourth in the girls 100 freestyle
and third in the 200 IM, just behind PA High School State Champions Meghan Raab
and Emily Cameron.
Marget Shelly won the 11-12 girls 400 IM shortly after,
dropping 24 seconds from her lifetime best to post a 4:47.64. Shelly’s
time was also a Charger Record and a meet record. Shelly followed her
performance by winning the 11-12 200 IM in 2:15.53, 100 fly in 1:03.79, and 100
free in 54.81, breaking three more meet and team records in the process.
The most notable performance, along with Stauffer’s open IM
record, came in the 11-12 girls 500 freestyle. Shelly posted a time of
5:13.24, which lowered her 11-12 Charger record by 13 seconds, set a meet
record, and set an open Charger girls team record. As a 12 year old,
Shelly is now the fastest 500 swimmer in Charger history, lowering Kristen
Montello’s previous mark by almost 3 seconds.
Danielle Pong, in her first meet as a 13 year old, posted
the third fastest time in both the 13-14 girls 100 and 200 yard breaststrokes.
She also dropped almost two seconds in her 50 freestyle to finish in
26.58. Pong’s 200 breast time of 2:44.34 was a 10 second drop from her
previous best.
Chandler Desotelle dropped six seconds in his 100 back on
his way to five personal bests. Annabelle McCullough posted 3 personal
bests, finishing second behind Shelly in the 11-12 girls 100 fly, and third in
the 11-12 girls 100 free. Karlee Metz and Kylee Metz also competed,
posting strong early season times in the 100 back, 200 free, and 50 freestyle
events.
The Chargers are looking forward to a successful
season. Their first meet in which the entire team will be participating
is on October 24. The team will host its annual Pentathlon on October
27. The Chargers are fast approaching 100 swimmers on the team and are
